The online gothic scene on YouTube is flooded with fast fashion. They are buying ridiculous amounts of junk from cheap sites with questionable morals, like Temu and Shein, just to see what the quality of the item they would receive would be.
Instead of DIYs, etc. Making the alternative scene look like its all about purchases. Look on any Killstar haul video and in the comments will be some baby bats complaining about the cost of getting into the subgenre.
But fret not! Because the dirt cheap option shown by these influencers is “just shop at Temu and hope for the best” despite their aware subscribers begging them to stop giving sweat shops money! In the mindset of YouTube, any kind of interaction, even negative, is good for pushing your channel into the faces of other people. So why stop.
I have been noticing more alternative people flocking to short form video platforms like TikTok or Reels to show off what they have bought recently. Usually this is tied to an affiliate or shop link. So, what can we do to reverse this wave of fast fashion through online influencers? Because I’m not sure.
I’ve already unsubscribed to many of the goth people I’ve been watching for awhile. As much as I don’t want to, and like the people for the most part.
Anyways, capitalism ruins everything, just make things yourself ya’ll. I’m sorry for this post to be so disjointed. I will probably expand on this later in a larger post, but not today.
